Top Sporting moments of 2005

Hiya folks !!!

It was a long break after my first post and the reason was there wasn't anything worthy or interesting to post about all these days. I could find anything and everything being blogged about in blogosphere and nothing much was left out.

But with the 2005 inching towards its close, it's that time of the year again. The 'Year in Review'. You could find this being done everywhere in MSM and I thought I'll do one for myself and that became the idea for my second post of the blog (At this rate, I am already a superstar celebrity- just one or two releases per year). When I say '2005 - Year in Review', I cannot go about and talk about all the things that happened in 2005 which would be too big a list to discuss. So I'll stick to my favourite and the one that I have some knowledge about - Sports.
Let's cut to the chase and list out my top sporting moments of 2005 (Sorry!!! Triwizard games don't count here!)

Maverick's Top sporting moments of 2005 (in no particular order)

1. England winning the Ashes.
2. Liverpool's stunning comeback in the second half of Champions trophy finals against AC Milan and winning it in extra time.
3. Rob Horry's (San Antonio Spurs) game winning 3 pointer with 5.8 secs left in Game 5 of 2005 NBA finals against the Detroit Pistons.
4. The rise of Sania Mirza - the new tennis sensation !!!
5. Lance Armstrong winning his 7th Tour De France title.
6. Roger Federer's becoming the 3rd man (after Bjorg, Sampras) to clinch 3 Wimbledon titles in succession when he beat Andy Roddick in 2005 Wimbledon finals.
7. Chelsea lifting the English Premiership crown after a gap of 50 years.
8. Sourav Ganguly, India's most successful test captain dropped from the Indian team after a spat with coach Greg Chappell.
9. The decline of Ferrari in F1 and the rise of Alonso.
10. The little master, Sachin Tendulkar scoring his record breaking 35th ton in test cricket and Lara becoming the highest run-getter in Test cricket.
11. Kiwis' record world record run chase against Australia in match 3 of Chappell-Hadlee series.

Well...that was my list and I'd love to see yours !!! What are you waiting for? Go ahead and post your top sporting moments of 2005 !!!

Mave,

The Women's Cricket is surely the least talked among all sports at international levels.

This year saw Australia lifting the World Cup and also the first century in a Women's World Cup Final

Hey Mave ,

Looks like you put in a lot of thought into this list. I couldn't disagree with any of the events you have mentioned above.

Somehow I do not think #s 8 and 10 qualify to be top sporting moments of 2005. With India as perspective, maybe they do. But on a world level, I dont think they mattered much.

If Sachin scoring his 35th 100 was such an event, I think Lara's accomplishments would have as much merit. Not that I am demeriting Sachin off his record. But, it was not one of those "great" ones. It was just another 100 that added to his tally. Rather, rise of Dhoni and Pathan in the Indian ranks would count in as something to reckon about. Again, this would matter only in the Indian context and not much on the world scene.

SG being dropped is just a hullabaloo... News hungry media blowing it beyond the wildest dreams was more the cause of the kind of aura that the SG issue has got today. SG has got a lot of sympathy wave popularity courtesy the media.

Roger Federer has cemented his place among the Gods of Tennis. I doubt if there is anybody who does not like his game. Rise of Sania is another great thing to have happened to Tennis in India. Her on-court duels with Williams and Sharapova was enough to catapult her into the prime league. Another match that I kinda remember fondly is the Agassi-Blake match! Man... that was something!!

I do not follow F1, Football or Basketball. So, I cannot really comment much about your other points that refer to these games.

I expected Dhoni's innings to figure somewhere in the list.. :)

RC,
Sachin's 35th ton was the least significant of all in that list, IMO. Maybe, being a fan of Indian cricket and Sachin and 35th ton being a world record, I included it. On second thoughts, I think I'll add Lara's WR of becoming the highest run getter in test cricket along with Sachin.

I have to disagree with you about Sourav's ouster. I agree that the media blew this issue out of proportions. But just the fact that India's most successful captain ever being ousted in the manner never before was a significant event by itself. Not just for Indian cricket, but for the world of cricket. BCCI is the richest brand in sports these days, you see :)

I gave a thought about Dhoni. Infact, not just Dhoni but about the emergence of the new talents - Kevin Pietersen, Dhoni, Justin Kemp, Hussey (new to intl' cricket). But then I decided that I'd stick with top 10 and add Sachin's 35 ton as 11th for sentimental value. Addin' a few others might have diluted the quality of the list, IMO.

It depends on the sports people follow and Cricket, Soccer, NBA, Tennis, F1 is what I follow the most. Maybe, it's the same case with you too!?

Btw, nobody has anything more to add on to this list?

"anything more to add on to this list" -- I thought Agassi - Blake match merits a mention. What say?

I liked this list. But somethings I would like to point out are as follows
1. The rise of Rafal Nadal
2. Chelsea beating Barcelona 4-2. Though it might not be at the finals, IMO that was THE match of last year!
3. Roy keane openly criticisizing Man U, and later quitting Man U.
4. Though it is not something pleasant, but only 6 cars pariticipated in the 2005 US GP. Thats something F1 hadnt witnessed!
